Teen Parent Driving Contract

Safety Belts: Teens have the lowest rate of seatbelt use.

Rule: I will always wear my seatbelt and require all of my passengers to do the same.

Consequences: _____________________________________________________________________________________

Violations: The first 1,000 hours behind the wheel are the most dangerous for teenagers.

Rule: I will obey the speed limit at all times. Under no circumstances will I drive recklessly, aggressively, or engage in any form of street racing.

Distractions: Cell phone use is the number one source of driver inattention behind the wheel.

Rule: I will not use my cell phone to talk or text while I am driving.

Consequences: __________________________________________________________________________

Number of passengers: Presence of passengers strongly increases the risk that a teen driver will be involved in a      crash. The risk doubles with 1 passenger and increases 5 times with 2 or more passengers.

Rule: I will limit the number of teen passengers in my car.

Alcohol and other drug use: One third of teen crashes involving alcohol result in fatality. Drugs other than alcohol are involved in about 18% of motor vehicle driver deaths.

Rule: I will never drive after consuming ANY alcohol or ANY other drugs

Driving limit: curfew, night driving: Over 50% of teen deaths from car crashes occur between 3 p.m. & midnight.

Rule: If I am a junior driver, I will obey the Graduated Licensing Law and how it affects my driving privileges. If I am a senior driver, I will obey the rules set by my parents and limit my night time driving until I am more experienced.

Emergencies: 1 in 3 drivers will be affected by impaired driving in their lifetime.

Rule: If I am in a dangerous or uncomfortable situation, as a driver or a passenger, I will call home for a ride or call a taxi without fear of punishment.

Other: car expenses, etc.

I promise to abide by the rules of the contract. If I break any of these rules, I will accept the consequences and take full responsibility for my actions, even if it means losing my driving privilege for a period of time.

I promise to enforce the rules of this agreement at all times. I have read the Graduated License Law and am familiar with all other NYS driving laws and restrictions that apply to my teen driver. If my teen driver does not abide by the rules of the contract, I will follow through with the consequences stated in the contract.
